Evening SUP session at Lagoihna

After making the mistake of going for a midday surf in the howling wind, it was a nice surprise when the wind dropped off, the water went glassy and the skies turned pink just in time for an hour’s SUP before it got dark!

Thanks to Rosie for standing on the beach taking photos (whilst secretly wanting to be elsewhere with an ice cream in her hand) x

SUP in the sun, Lagoihna, Brazil

Here’s a couple of clips from the other day when I caught a few waves on the SUP in the sun at Lagoihna.

The sun then disappeared (as it often does here in the afternoon) but there were still waves to be had, so the only thing to do was to stay in the water and get a few more!

Grey Days & Good Waves, Lagoinha (Litoral Paulista, Brazil)

A grey and windy autumnal day at Lagoinha (Litoral Paulista, Brazil). The wind dropped for 30 mins or so late afternoon, the waves were clean and I scored a few nice long clean rides on my SUP. And the best thing about Brazil in the autumn, the water is still warmer than the UK at the height of summer. Board shorts and a small rash vest all the way!

Good times!

New swell building at Massaguaçu

This morning a new swell started to build here in Massaguaçu. I was unforunately stuck on the computer all morning working. But I did manage to break free this afternoon and drive up to Lagoihna for a few.

For some reason though I surfed pretty badly. I think it was a result of getting too worked up and then trying too hard once in the water. Mental note to oneself, chill out more next time.

Fortunately the swell is here for 3 or 4 days, so I will give it another crack tomorrow after work!

Surfing Prainha, Rio de Janeiro with Thiago & Rose

Thiago, Rose and I headed west today from Copacabana over to Prainha for some beach and surf action. The swell was in the 1-2 metre range, so plenty of size, but unfortunately closing out a lot. We still managed to get some nice waves in the sun together and then chill out on the beach afterwards for a well-earned rest!

Stand Up Paddle Boarding from Massaguaçu to Ilha do Tamandua

So today turned into a big of an accidental SUP marathon. It wasn’t meant to be, I was just gonna go out for a quick paddle then come back to the apartment and chill, but I got a bit carried away.

The conditions were horrible. What little sun we had earlier in the morning had gone and been replaced by strong onshore winds, plenty of threatening cloud (which did eventually poor down with torrential rain) and super choppy sea reminiscent of surfing in the UK on a “summers” day. At least the air (and water) temperature was still in the high twenties.

Today I paddle (kneeling down) over to Praia da Mococa (about 3km). Had a little rest on the beach and then paddle the open water stretch to Ilha do Tamandua, 2km out to sea. There is an amazing view of the mainland from the island, it is a shame I didn’t take my gopro camera (next time eh!). The water is super clear and the sand on the beach is clean and fine. The only thing that spoilt the occasion was the bunch of rich Brazilians on the yachts and jetskis pumping out crap into the water.

The return journey took me back across the open water channel and over to Ilhote da Cocanha, where I stopped off for another rest, before I hit the home straight across a rather choppy sea back to Massaguaçu.

I’m now absolutely knackered. It turned out to be about a 10km round trip, which was a little more than I was planning to do, but hey. I’ve now refuelled on eggs and toast, fresh lime juice and içaí, granola and bananas and can feel a wave of sleepiness coming over me.

Pretty stoked with the effort today, I reckon that 15km marathon paddle isn’t far out of reach!

Stand Up Paddle Boarding from Massaguaçu to Mococa

Another little outing on the paddle board. This time I wanted to extend the distance I paddled. So whilst Rose, her sister and the kids headed off to Praia da Mococo in the car I decided to paddle the 3km across from Massaguaçu on my SUP board. The conditions weren’t great, too much wind creating a chop on the water, meaning I had to kneel for half the way. But I got there in the end.

I chilled on the beach for a while with the kids and then hit the water again and headed back to Massaguaçu. All in all about a 6km paddle, not too bad.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding at Praia da Forteleza, Ubatuba

A few days ago I headed off to Praia da Forteleza, Ubatuba with Rose, her sister and the kids. After a few hours worth of sand castle building I took to the calm waters and had a paddle across the bay. I even stumbled upon a small beach next to Forteleza where I caught my first wave on the new SUP board.
