Sunsets, stolen shoes and riding the fatima

02/05/2007

So the last few days have resulted in some significantly bigger waves down at the Farrol. I have been treated to some pretty heavy wipe outs including a few mid-air bails straight down a 6ft wave face, some face slaps and some general poundings. On the bright side the past 3 evenings I have surfed until it is dark and have been treated to some pretty sweet sunsets over the water.

Last night as the sun was going down, about 200m up the beach towards the lighthouse there was a free Brazilian concert. 100s of people took to the streets to enjoy the music, get a few ales inside them and generally have a good time, it was like mini carnavale for me, haha!

Today the surf was pretty intense, I attempted to take Elise out on the 6’4, but she wasn’t really zoned up, so I took it on solo. The sets were thick, but messy, I got a few nice rides today and am getting used to the feel of the 6’0 fish. I surfed again until sunset and then returned to the beach to find someone had stolen my flip flops, nice huh! I had specifically hidden them in a whole in the breakwater, but someone must have seen me pop them in there, as I checked every hole on my return, but they were nowhere to be seen.

Salvador is pretty poor, so I guess some people have developed an opportunistic/survivalist attitude and if they thought they could get away with it, then they would probably steal the shirt off your back. I guess I should feel lucky so far though, if a pair of flip flops being nabbed is the most that will happen to me on this trip then someone is watching over my shoulder. Brazil is probably like most other places, it has its safe bits and its dodgy bits. But whereas back home the good neighbourhoods and separated from the bad ones, here everything is just a big honey pot and mixed up altogether.

On a brighter note, we have had a few nice days of sunshine (apart from today) and have relaxed by the pool and soaked it all up. The swell is supposed to hold for another 3 or 4 days, so I am hoping to make the most of it over the next few days.

Here is a little sunset pic that we took a few nights ago, no waves in this one as it is in the sheltered harbour area.
